Martial Arts

A significant amount of research has explored the psychological effects of martial arts training. Martial arts that emphasize tradition, mindfulness, and respect have been shown to offer a number of benefits, including:

– Lower aggression and hostility
– Increased self-regulation of thoughts and emotions
– Improvements in behavior and respect of authority
– Greater self-esteem and self-acceptance
– Increased hope

Martial arts can also be useful for individuals who have experienced interpersonal trauma, providing a safe place for such individuals to learn how to protect themselves.

I have trained for several years at the Chapel Hill Quest Center, and I have experienced many of the benefits described above. I also have worked in conjunction with the Quest Center to provide after-school programs for children at schools like Duke School and Club Boulevard Elementary School.
